Mill Park Training Room on Monday 23rd April was the venue for our 2nd in the series of 'Creating Content' for Library Worker 2.0.

Liz Pidgeon, our Local History Librarian gave us an overview of the Yarra Plenty Libraries local history collections and highlighted our homepage Links.

Liz recently ran a class on 'Researching your Military Ancestors", highlighting these Online Resources (it's amazing what is out there!!, perhaps a Delicious list?)

Online Exhibition: A Website to Remember
Visit "Despatches from Gallipoli"to gain insights into the Gallipoli conflict from the viewpoint of the official World War 1 correspondents. The website includes transcripts of the news stories of four Australian journalists, and highlights their role in the development of an Australian identity. It includes war images, accounts of battles, and examples of censorship and discussions of the Australian legend and a copy of a letter written by Keith Murdoch, to Prime Minister Fisher regarding the conditions facing Australian troops at Gallipoli.

We brainstormed on how we can use and promote our Resources with a:
Wish list for future projects.
Quality scanners for for each Region to digitize photos and artifacts held by the libraries or local history societies.
Podcasting equipment for the 'Reminiscences Project'.
Researching YOUR house Project
Street Names Project.
Online Cemetery records.
Local War Memorials
Local newspaper indexing.
Sourcing out-of-print books via the Web eg. eBay, Abebooks.
Local History Wiki as a collaborative resource.

Lynette Lewis, Co-ordinator of Online Services demonstrated the Sirsi Dynix Hyperion Digital Media Archive. A tool that offers easy organizing, storing, maintenance, and accessing of non-book holdings in a digital format. (including movies and mp3s.)

We also looked at other resources for Local History via our newspaper databases.

Time was spent playing in our Yarra Plenty PBWiki Sandbox, creating pages for ourselves, adding content, photos etc.

Creating Contenders appreciated the time to work on their Projects and two class members set up their Blogs preparing to tackle 'The 23 Things'.

All in all a successful Day of Work and Play!

The sky is the limit in offering 2.0 technology classes to the public. We already offer email classes, how about a class on Google docs, (read their blog)
